Ok, here we go members of the Horde playing Alterac Valley... Look at this map. Do you see the three red X's? Those are called choke points. Choke points help a smaller force successfully defend a stationary position against a larger attacking force. I'll go over each specific choke point in detail.

The first is the most obvious, the Low Road to Stormpike. I like to think of this point as the ultimate meatgrinder. This area features a narrow, curving road that makes it very easy to concentrate Area of Effect Damage. I don't think this is a good place to launch an assault. All the unimaginative Hordies just throw themselves against the Alliance Defense. Just because there is a road, it doesn't mean you have to use it!

The High Road to Stormpike where you jump down to the GY is the second choke point. Yet another narrow passage, where the 1367345 Night Elf Hunters can mow you down. This one is made even worse when a group of Alliance spawn behind you. Nothing quite like being stuck in the middle of a crossfire.

The last choke point is the High Road to Stormpike and then circling around by the mine. This one is slightly better, but the Alliance are regularly guarding this spot now. In addition, going this route tends to string out an attacking force making it easier to pick people off. There is a better way to go...

GO UNDER THE BRIDGE! Back in the day, Horde teams would regularly mount a cavalry charge up the valley that the dreaded bridge spans. They would then hit Stormpike hard from behind. There are two factors that increase the chance of success by making this kind of attack. The first is the funneling effect the valley has on your forces. People tend to stay together better because there is only one way to go. The second is the wide open northwest side of Stormpike GY. Once the valley opens up, you don't have any choke points preventing you from getting to the flag.

I just wish people would try this approach. I bet most newer players have never even been in the valley. Oh well, I make a point of mentioning it in /bg chat just about every time I'm in AV. I hope that people will think about it, and maybe even try to mount the heroic, cavalry charge against SP.
